About Reeds Ablaze in Rain
The lower half of this wide canvas is filled with vertical spikes of orange, scarlet and rust that read as a bank of reeds, their tips rising at uneven heights across the width. Behind and above them the canvas opens into a soft grey-blue field, dragged downward with thin yellow, cream and pale green streaks that fall like rain. Paint is applied in dry, vertical strokes so the weave of the canvas shows through, and edges between the reeds and the sky blur rather than meet cleanly.
There is no drawn detail anywhere, only direction and colour temperature: hot reds at the base, cool haze above. The effect is of a marsh seen through a wet window, calm overall but with real heat along the bottom edge.
The long, low horizon suits a wall above a sofa, a sideboard or a bedhead, and the 200 x 100cm size works in a wide hallway. The grey-blue upper half sits well with cool grey walls, linen and pale timber, while the orange reeds pick up terracotta pots, rust cushions or a tan leather chair.
