About A Day to Sail II
A loose cluster of tall triangular sails fills the upper two thirds of this portrait composition, drawn in cream, white and pale ochre against a washed teal sky. The sails overlap at different heights, some crisp-edged, others dissolving into the background so the fleet reads as a single drifting shape. Small hulls sit in a band of watery blue-grey at the waterline, marked by short horizontal strokes and a few flecks of rust and gold. Dry, scraped texture runs through the sails and sky.
Below the boats the canvas breaks into wide horizontal bands of sand, cream and deep teal, cut by a burnt rust-red smear near the centre. It is a quiet, hazy piece that suggests a regatta seen through morning glare rather than describing any boat in detail.
Suits coastal and beach house interiors, a bedroom above a bed head, or a dining room wall where the teal can pick up glassware and linen. Works with whitewashed timber, rattan, pale oak and blue-grey upholstery. The portrait shape fits narrow wall sections beside a window or at the end of a hallway.
