About A Different Sun
A large circular form fills most of the portrait canvas, built up in relief so the surface sits proudly off the background. An outer ring of gold ochre radiates short, tapering spikes like a child's drawing of the sun, while four small pale cream beads sit at even points around the inner disc. The centre holds a darker red medallion ringed by ten more cream studs, with one larger bead at the dead centre. The surrounding field is scarlet fading to rust at the corners.
The texture reads like pressed leather or beaten metal, pitted and grained under thin red glazes. It is a quiet, totemic piece: symmetrical, warm and slightly ceremonial rather than decorative.
Warm and self-contained, it works on a single feature wall in a lounge room, entry hall or reading nook. Sits well against white, charcoal or clay-coloured walls, and pairs with timber furniture, tan leather, woven rugs and brass or copper lighting. Good above a sideboard or a low bench where the raised surface catches lamplight. Browse more the Statton Collection, abstract oil paintings.
