About A Quiet Refrain II
A woman is shown from behind and slightly above, her head turned to the left so only the line of her cheek and jaw is visible. Her fair hair is gathered and pinned high, with loose strands falling at the nape of her neck, and a small amber earring catches the light. She wears an off-the-shoulder gown in cream and pale grey, the fabric wrapped across her back and gathered at the waist before falling into a full skirt. Behind her right shoulder is the rust-red back of an upholstered chair.
The background is a wash of ochre, tan and warm brown, mottled and scratched so faint marks show through like an old plaster wall. The overall feeling is quiet and composed: a figure caught mid-thought rather than posing, with all the colour warmth sitting behind the cool white of the dress.
Suits a main bedroom above a bedhead or dresser, a formal dining room, or a hallway with warm white or putty-coloured walls. The terracotta and ochre tones work with timber furniture, rattan, linen bedding and brass or antique gold fittings. Pair it with a second figurative piece, or hang it alone over a console.
