About African Couple
Two elongated figures stand against a flat field of deep red, holding hands at the centre of the portrait composition. The figure on the left wears a red top over a cream skirt and raises one arm towards a small white circle of moon in the upper left. The figure on the right is wrapped in a full-length cream robe marked with fine script-like scratches, balancing a pale bowl heaped with white blooms on her head. A thin black horizon line runs behind them, with a slender bare tree and dark red leaves at the right edge.
Red flower shapes with spiked petals sit along the lower edge of the ground, drawn in darker red with black outlines. The surface of the artwork shows a mottled, lightly cracked texture through the red field, and the cream garments carry scuffed, chalky markings. It reads as quiet and ceremonial: simple silhouettes, one strong colour and a few careful details carrying the whole scene.
Works in a bedroom above a timber bedhead, in a dining room on a white or warm sand wall, or in a hallway where the red can carry from a distance. Pairs with rattan, linen in cream and clay, black metal frames and terracotta pots. Also suits a beach house with darker interior timbers.
