About Alone in Trial
A single tree stands slightly right of centre, its rounded canopy filling the lower half of the composition. The foliage is painted in crimson and scarlet with a bleached white core, so the crown reads as though it is lit from inside. A slender pale trunk drops to a flat red ground plane scattered with small light-struck shapes. Above, the sky moves from black through smoky charcoal to a faint warm brown at the top edge, with a soft dark mass suggesting hills behind the tree. Edges of the canopy are broken and feathered rather than drawn.
The mood is quiet and slightly theatrical: one bright red form holding its ground under a heavy, unlit sky.
Works in rooms with dark or neutral walls: a charcoal feature wall in a lounge, a hallway with black timber floors, or above a leather sofa. Pairs with brass lamps, smoked glass and deep grey linen. The portrait shape suits narrow wall sections beside a doorway, staircase or bedhead. Browse more landscape oil paintings, red art, the Statton Collection.
