About Ambiguous One
A slender curved stem rises from the lower left and carries a single closed bud, painted in silver-grey and violet with a fine highlight down one side. Behind it a broad band of sky blue opens through the centre of the canvas. Rust brown and mauve wash across the right half and the upper corners, breaking into speckles, rings and blotted circles where the pigment has pooled and dried. A rippling, frilled leaf shape edged in turquoise drifts down the middle, its outline drawn in thin dark brown lines.
The paint behaves like ink in water, with soft blooms and hard-dried edges rather than brush marks, so the whole surface reads as weathered and mineral. The lone bud gives the composition a quiet focal point in an otherwise drifting field of colour.
Works in a bedroom above a low bedhead, a hallway end wall or a bathroom with stone or timber finishes. The rust and sky blue sit well with pale linen, brass fittings, walnut timber and grey-green plants. Hang it alone rather than in a pair so the single bud keeps its quiet.
