About African Elephants Exotiques
A square composition built around a large elephant shown in profile, facing left, its trunk curving down toward the lower edge. The body is a deep charcoal silhouette filled with faint damask scrollwork and floral motifs that read through the dark tone like a stencilled fabric. Beneath and slightly in front of it stands a smaller elephant in ochre gold, overlapping the adult's front legs. The background is a layered wash of off-white, pale silver-grey and gold, printed with swirling baroque patterns, rosettes and leaf curls.
The mood is decorative rather than wildlife-realistic: two animal shapes used as graphic forms against an ornamental, wallpaper-like ground. The worn, slightly rubbed pattern gives the image a quiet vintage feel with a warm metallic lift from the gold.
Works in a bedroom above a bed head, in a hallway, or over a sideboard in a living room. The charcoal and gold sit well with linen bedding, rattan and timber furniture, brass lamps and patterned cushions.
