About Apples and Violin
A group of six deep red apples sits at the centre right of the table, clustered on rust-red drapery with one apple set apart on a fold of cream cloth at the left. Behind them stands a dark, near-black lidded jar with a metal band and handle loops, its glazed surface catching a cool highlight. A honey-toned violin leans against the wall on the right, neck and bow rising past the top edge, with a glass tumbler of amber liquid and two brushes beside it.
The background is a mottled olive and sand wall, scraped and scumbled so the canvas weave shows. Folds of pale linen fall in broad, buttery strokes across the foreground, while the apples are painted more tightly, with crisp white specular dots. It is a quiet, warm-toned arrangement that reads as an artist's table at rest.
Suits dining rooms, kitchens and hallway nooks where warm reds and ochres pick up timber furniture, terracotta tiles or leather seating. It works above a sideboard or buffet, and sits well with brass candlesticks, stoneware and older timber pieces. The olive wall tones also settle against sage or cream painted walls.
