A black and white photograph of the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, shot from a low angle at street level so the monument rises tall in the portrait frame. Floodlights pick out the pale stone, the carved relief panels, the deep central arch with its coffered ceiling and the sculpted figures on the pier in the foreground.
The sky is a dark, even grey and the top corners are framed by soft, out-of-focus leaves. Below, the cobbled road is crossed by thin streaks of light from passing traffic, and a few street lamps glow along the distant edges. Contrast is strong, with bright stone against deep shadow and a fine film-like grain.
