The upper half shows the front elevation of a symmetrical stone mansion, drawn in fine engraved lines. Four tall columns rise through two storeys to a triangular pediment carrying a carved panel, with three statues standing on the roofline and an urn at each end. A wide flight of steps leads to the central door. Below it sits a small foot scale marked in feet.
The lower half is the ground floor plan, with thick grey walls, staircases and room numbers set in small script. A caption beneath the elevation reads, in part, "Elevation of Atherton in the County of Lancaster the Seat of Richard Atherton Esqr." and carries the date 1723. The plan is labelled "Plan of Atherton". Black ink on white paper gives it a crisp eighteenth-century engraving feel.
