About Austin's Tulips I
Three large tulip heads fill this square composition, each drawn in a simplified, flattened way with smooth blocks of colour. A deep crimson bloom sits top right, an orange-red bloom sits centre and slightly lower, and a tan-gold flower leans in from the upper left. Thin white contour lines run down the petals to suggest curl and overlap, while soft shading darkens the petal edges. Slim brown stems curve down to the lower edge, and the background is a flat warm cream with a faint woven canvas texture showing through.
The mood is calm and graphic rather than realistic: the flowers read as shapes first, colour second. The restricted palette of rust, brick red and tan against cream keeps it warm and easy to live with.
A warm, low-key square that suits bedrooms, dining rooms and home offices with cream, oatmeal or clay walls.
