A large weeping tree fills the square frame, its dark branches drooping in fine, hair-like strands that reach almost to the ground on both sides. The trunk splits low into two main limbs, and the whole crown is a near-black silhouette against a pale, glowing sky.
The sun sits low behind the trunk, sending soft rays of light across a band of mist and throwing a long shadow toward the viewer. The foreground is a field of cut stalks and straw, rendered in grainy greys. Faint hills sit behind the mist. It is a black and white photograph with deep blacks and bright, hazy highlights.
