About Blue Damsel
A young woman fills almost the whole square canvas, cropped so her chin sits near the lower edge and her hair touches the top corners. She wears a bright cobalt bob with a blunt fringe cut straight across the forehead, the strands painted in fine parallel strokes that catch pale blue highlights on the crown and darken to deeper blue in the shadow beside her cheeks. Her skin is worked in smooth cream and soft peach tones with almost no visible brushmarks, and the background is a flat near-black charcoal.
Her large brown eyes look straight out at the viewer, and her lips are painted the same strong blue as the hair, with a lighter blue sheen along the upper curve. The mood is calm and direct, a quiet face made striking by two bold blocks of colour.
A single square portrait works well above a sideboard in a hallway, in a bedroom above a low bed head, or on a dark feature wall in a lounge room. The cobalt reads strongly against white, grey or charcoal paint, and pairs with black metal frames, pale timber furniture and blue or navy cushions.
