Several irises in blue, periwinkle and soft violet fill a vertical composition, each bloom showing ruffled petals and a small yellow-orange patch at the throat. Two purple buds stand upright on the right edge, and one sits at the lower left. The flowers are scattered from top to bottom rather than centred.
Tall blades of leaf run through the whole picture in teal, olive, sap green and ochre, with pale gaps where white paper shows through. The watercolour washes bleed and pool at their edges, and a few fine brown splatters dot the upper right. The top right corner is left almost white, which lightens the busy field of colour.
