A single spray of seaweed sits at the centre of a portrait sheet, its pale branches forking again and again until the tips fan out into fine feathery ends. The shape is roughly oval, with a thick stem running up from the lower middle. The white of the fronds stands out sharply against the deep blue ground.
The blue is uneven, with lighter cloudy patches along the top edge, dark flecks and spots near the corners, and a soft pale band across the upper third. At the foot a small white label carries the handwritten-style words "Halymenia furcellata." in italic script. The whole sheet has the look of an early cyanotype contact print.
