A large white seaweed fills the middle of the sheet, its forked fronds fanning out from a dense base near the centre and reaching to the left and right edges. The fronds are pale and slightly translucent, with soft cloudy edges where the blue shows through. The background is a mottled Prussian blue, darker in the corners and washed lighter behind the main specimen.
Four smaller sprigs sit across the top, trailing fine, thread-like roots and hairlike strands in pale blue. At the bottom is a handwritten caption in white: "Dictyota dichotoma in the young state, & in fruit." The uneven blue ground and photogram-style silhouettes give it the feel of a nineteenth-century botanical record.
