A crowded field of open poppies fills this square watercolour, with the largest bloom in coral and rose pink just right of centre. Its petals ruffle and fold, with white paper gaps left where light catches the edges. Dark charcoal centres with feathery stamens anchor each flower.
Smaller poppies in blush, cream and salmon overlap around it, some cropped by the edges. Behind them the wash shifts between pale sage green, soft teal and a faint butter yellow. Pigment pools and blooms into soft, wet-edged patches, and the textured paper grain shows through, giving the whole scene a loose, airy feel.
