About Body of Land
The painting is built from three broad bands. Along the top, a pale blue-grey sky sits above a soft violet ridge that dips in the centre and runs off to the right edge, its edges blurred as if seen through haze. Below it a mustard-gold slope crosses from the left, catching the strongest light. The lower two thirds are given to open ground in ochre, apricot and deep rust, with a paler tan hollow curving through the middle like a shallow dry gully.
The surface carries fine vertical strokes and dragged dry-brush marks, thickest in the rust foreground where flecks of gold and dark red break through. There is no sky detail, no tree and no figure. The character is quiet and pared back: a wide stretch of dry country reduced to colour, light and texture rather than description.
Suits a lounge room or dining wall with timber, leather or linen, and works well above a low sideboard or bedhead. The rust and ochre bands pick up terracotta pots, jute rugs and tan upholstery, while the violet ridge keeps it from reading too warm against white or clay-coloured walls.
