About Brown Field
A harvested field fills the lower two thirds of the canvas in strong yellows and ochres, worked with a heavily textured surface of short scratched and swirled strokes that catch the light like stubble. Six rounded hay bales sit across the middle, the largest just right of centre, each painted in deeper amber and rust with darker shadow under its base and thin drips of colour running down into the crop. Behind them a low ridge of hills runs flat and dark, mixed from navy and near-black.
Above the ridge the sky is a soft, chalky wash of mauve and pale grey, quiet against the heat of the field. The painting keeps a simple horizontal structure and lets colour and surface do the work.
Suits a dining room, hallway or living area with timber, linen and warm white walls. The gold and navy read well above a leather sofa or a sideboard, and the flat horizon line works over a long piece of furniture. Good beside brass lamps, woven baskets and dark-stained frames.
