About Buddha's Faith
A young Buddha figure fills the canvas from the shoulders up, painted entirely in greys, whites and black. The shaved head is smooth and rounded, lit from the upper left so the crown catches a soft pale glow while the brow and eye sockets fall into shadow. The eyes are closed with long curved lids, the nose is broad and the small mouth is relaxed. Two long earlobes hang beside the cheeks, and two strands of large round prayer beads loop down over the robe.
Hands are pressed palm to palm in front of the mouth, fingers tapering to highlighted tips. The robe falls in wide soft folds across the chest, its ridges picked out in white and its hollows sunk into charcoal. The background is near black on the left and lifts to a mottled slate grey on the right, with faint horizontal seams suggesting a stone wall. The painting is quiet and still, with a sculpted, carved-stone feel rather than a decorative one.
Suits a bedroom wall above the bedhead, a meditation or yoga corner, a hallway end wall or a bathroom with stone tiles. Works with grey linen, timber, rattan and concrete finishes, and sits well beside a black metal floor lamp or a single tall plant. The monochrome palette keeps busy rooms calm.
