About Smear
A square canvas built from short, squared-off brush strokes that overlap like loose tiles. Most of the surface is milky white and pale cream, scrubbed thin so the weave shows through. Colour arrives in patches: a magenta and orange glow in the lower left corner, a run of lemon yellow up the centre, bright lime green squares through the middle and right, and a concentrated band of hot pink, purple and blue near the top right. A soft charcoal grey smudge sits at upper left, with dragged drips beneath it.
There is no horizon or figure, only blocks of colour surfacing and sinking under white. The paint is applied flat and wiped, so edges blur where one block meets another and sharpen where a stroke was laid last. The character is light and airy, with a few deliberate jolts of saturated colour that keep the pale field from going quiet.
Works in bright, light-filled rooms: above a white or oak sideboard in a hallway, over a low sofa in pale linen, or in a bedroom above the bed head. The pink and lime patches pick up cushions, glassware and fresh flowers, and the grey smudge ties it to concrete, steel and black-framed windows.
