About Captivate
A row of waterfront buildings runs from the middle of the canvas to the right edge, painted in ochre, orange, lime green, cream and deep red, with small dark windows and red and green awnings at street level. Below them the water is almost black, broken by long vertical strokes of white and pale grey that stand in for reflections. The sky is a flat charcoal grey with streaked white cloud, and a low dark treeline closes the left horizon. A single white boat sits alone on the left.
The paint is laid on thickly with a knife, so the roofs and walls in the foreground carry visible ridges and scraped edges while the water stays smooth and dark. The contrast between the grey monochrome setting and the saturated buildings gives the picture a quiet, slightly theatrical mood.
Works in a lounge room or dining room with grey, charcoal or white walls, where the orange and lime buildings supply the only strong colour. Good above a dark timber sideboard or a slate-toned sofa, and it pairs with black metal lamps, linen cushions and other coastal or Mediterranean scenes.
