Two young children kneel on wet sand at low tide, heads bent over a small mound of sandcastle topped with a red flag. The boy wears a white shirt with orange stripes and blue shorts, and holds a yellow spade. The girl, in a pale swimsuit with a yellow clip in her blonde hair, sits opposite him.
Shallow tide pools reflect blue sky and streaks of pink and teal from a bucket and a stack of small pink pails. Green grass patches run behind them, then a pale sand bar and a thin band of deep blue sea. Tiny red, orange and yellow umbrellas dot the far shore under a soft cloudy sky. Visible brushwork gives it a loose, sunlit painterly feel.
