A concrete causeway runs from the lower foreground toward a small rocky island, leading the eye straight to a tall white lighthouse. Beside it sit a few low buildings with red roofs. Shallow water covers the sand on both sides of the path, and patches of green weed cling to the dark rocks.
The sky takes up more than half the frame, a thick band of slate grey and deep blue cloud that lightens to a pale blue strip at the horizon. The sea is calm and silvery, with small white breaks along the shore. Sandy orange ground in the lower left warms an otherwise cool photograph.
