About Charcoal Drops A
The whole surface is filled with repeated teardrop and comma-shaped marks in dense black, sitting on a bright white ground. Each mark is broad at the base and tapers upward, with a dry, slightly frayed edge where the ink has skipped, leaving speckles and fine grain around the outline. The marks lean in slightly different directions and vary in size, so the pattern reads as loose and hand-made rather than mechanical. Small white gaps run between them like narrow channels across the portrait format.
Tonally it stays strictly two-tone: solid black against white, with soft grey only where an edge has feathered. The character is graphic and rhythmic, closer to a printed textile than a picture, and it holds its punch from across a room while showing all its ragged detail up close.
Works in a bedroom above a bed with plain linen, in a hallway, home office or bathroom where a strong graphic note is needed. It sits well with black-framed photographs, pale timber, white or grey walls and brass or matt black fittings, and pairs neatly with a second monochrome print of the same size.
