About African Profile in Red
A woman is shown in sharp profile, her head and face filled in flat black so only the outline of forehead, nose and chin reads against the background. A white headwrap sweeps back from her brow, banded at the front with strips of red, ochre and silver. A single hoop earring holds two small white discs. Below, a fanned collar of pale cream and grey beads spreads across her shoulders, outlined in a thin red line, above a sloping torso in warm apricot and deep red.
The upper band of the background is scraped silver-white, the middle a dark maroon, and the lower third is scratched through with looping white and black marks that read like handwriting. Blocks of pure red sit either side of the figure. The paint is laid on thickly with a knife, ridged and uneven, so light catches the raised edges. The overall character is bold and graphic, warm in colour but quiet in mood.
Suits a living room with warm timber, leather or rattan furniture, and works well on a white or charcoal wall where the red blocks can carry. Also good above a sideboard in an entry or dining room.
