About Riverbend Gums
A tall pale-trunked gum stands slightly right of centre, its thin branches spreading olive and rust-tipped foliage across the upper half of the square canvas. A second smaller gum leans in from the left. Between them a still blue-grey river curves back toward a hazy line of trees and a soft blue hill under a clear sky brushed with thin white cloud. On the far bank a tiny cottage with a red roof sits beside a low post-and-rail fence running along a pale dirt track.
The foreground is the loudest part: thick dabs of orange, crimson and yellow laid on with a knife to suggest a field of flowering grass, breaking sharply against the cool blues of the water and distant ridge. The overall effect is calm and picture-like, with one band of hot colour holding the eye at the base.
Suits a lounge room, dining room or hallway with warm timber floors, cane or leather furniture and cream walls. The orange foreground picks up terracotta pots, rugs and tan leather, while the blue river works with denim, navy cushions and grey linen. A good single feature above a sideboard or fireplace.
