About Contemplation
A single seated figure is drawn from behind in one continuous black ink line on a plain white ground. The head is tilted slightly to the right, shoulders dropped, the curve of the spine running down the centre of the sheet to hips folded on the floor. One arm falls behind the body and a bent leg extends to the lower left, ending in a loosely sketched foot. The line varies from hairline thin to broad and blotted, with small pooled marks at the shoulder blade, hip and ankle.
Nothing else occupies the page except a faint horizontal stroke near the base that suggests the floor. The character is quiet and unfinished on purpose: a quick study that reads as a whole body from only a dozen decisions of the pen.
Works in a bedroom above a bed or dresser, in a bathroom or ensuite where white tiles keep the palette clean, and in dressing rooms or hallways. Pairs with black metal frames, linen bedding, pale timber and other black and white line work hung as a pair or trio. Browse more contemporary art, or read Art above the bed: what size and how high.
