A tall bunch of gladioli fills the portrait format, their ruffled blooms in coral, salmon and strong red scattered from the top right down to the lower left. Each flower is built from wet, overlapping washes, with pale pink edges where the pigment thins and small red flecks spattered around the petals.
Behind and below the flowers, long sword-like leaves and stems run in streaks of lime, olive, teal and deep blue. The colour drips and bleeds downward in vertical runs. Soft blue and cream paper shows through at the top left and bottom edge, which keeps the whole watercolour loose, airy and unfinished at the borders.
