A single branching stem carries seven red roses and two buds, rising from a thin crossed base at the bottom centre. The blooms sit at different heights and angles, so the eye zigzags from the large rose at lower left up to the small bud at the top. Dark green leaves cluster around the stem.
The background is a soft, mottled wash of olive green, grey and warm apricot, with no horizon or table. Brushwork is loose and visible, with thick strokes on the petals and feathery, scratchy lines for thin leaves and twigs. One small pink bloom near the centre breaks up the reds. A faint signature sits at the lower right corner.
