About Orange Bloom Burst
A round bouquet of orange flowers fills the centre of the canvas, built almost entirely with a palette knife. Each bloom is a cluster of short, loaded strokes, some pressed flat into five-petal shapes with a dot of yellow at the heart, others left as thick beads of paint that scatter out towards the edges like loose buds. Beneath the flowers sits a dark vase, its wide belly lit with streaks of yellow, olive and white where the knife dragged wet paint across the near-black base.
The background is worked in broad, chopped facets of cobalt and pale sky blue with white lifting behind the bouquet, so the orange reads hot against cool. It is a bright, high-contrast flower painting with real surface relief - paint you can see standing up off the canvas.
Works above a sideboard in a white or grey dining room, in an entry hall, or over a bed where you want one strong point of colour. Pairs with navy upholstery, natural timber and brass lamps. Orange cushions or a rust rug will pick up the petals; keep surrounding walls plain so the impasto surface catches side light.
