Several dahlia heads are drawn in fine ink lines, each petal filled with close parallel strokes. The largest bloom sits right of centre, outlined in white over a deep red wash. Two more dahlias in dark line sit on the left, and a pale outlined flower reaches in from the top and lower left corners.
Loose watercolour stains in leaf green and crimson run behind and through the flowers, with darker pooled edges where the colour settled. The paper white shows around the washes, so the square composition has plenty of open space. Line work turns white on the dark patches and black on the lighter ones, a mix of drawing and watercolour.
