About Daigoji Buddhist Temple
A small vermilion temple pavilion sits on the left bank of a dark pond, its curved grey-tiled roof and finial spire lit from below so the timber posts and railings glow orange. To the right an arched wooden bridge crosses the water, strung with small lights. Behind and above, densely packed maples and evergreens fill the frame in rust, amber, olive and deep green, with bare pale branches catching the floodlights. Mossy boulders line the shore. The lower third is still black water holding a full inverted reflection of the pavilion, bridge and trees.
The photograph is quiet and warm rather than dramatic: artificial lighting picks out the buildings and foliage while the surrounding forest falls away into near-black, and the unbroken reflection doubles the scene so the colour sits in both halves of the frame.
Warm and dark, so it reads well on white, grey or charcoal walls in a dining room, hallway or home office. It suits timber furniture, rattan and black metal, and works beside other travel photography. In a bedroom the low light levels keep it restful; larger sizes carry a long lounge wall.
