In May 1800 Napoleon Bonaparte led his army over the Great St Bernard Pass into Italy, a march that ended a month later in victory at Marengo. Jacques-Louis David, the leading painter of the French Revolution and soon to be Napoleon's court painter, turned that crossing into the most famous piece of political image-making in European art.

Everything in the picture is arranged to carry the eye upward: the grey horse rearing against the wind, the red cloak whipping across the sky, Napoleon's bare hand pointing over the summit while his face stays perfectly calm. In the rocks at the lower left David carved three names, BONAPARTE, HANNIBAL and KAROLUS MAGNUS, placing the young general beside the two commanders who had crossed the Alps before him. Far below, the army hauls its cannon up the track.

The reality was more modest. Napoleon crossed a few days after his troops, in fine weather, on a sure-footed mule led by a local guide. He refused to sit for the portrait and told David that what mattered was not the likeness but the spirit, asking only to be shown "calm on a fiery horse". David worked from Napoleon's uniform on a mannequin. The commission came from King Charles IV of Spain; Napoleon liked the result so much that he ordered further copies, and David and his workshop painted five versions between 1801 and 1805.
