About Docked
A cluster of fishing boats sits on wet sand at low tide, their hulls tipped at slight angles. Three in the left foreground are painted in red, crimson and white with dark keels, while a smaller red dinghy rests at the right edge. Behind them, two large sails in ochre and pale cream catch the light above a line of dark blue and black hulls. A forest of thin vertical masts runs across the picture, drawn in fine dark strokes against a washed grey sky and a faint, barely readable waterfront.
Small figures in red, white and dark clothing walk on the sand between the boats, giving scale. The paint is laid on with a knife in flat planes on the hulls and dragged horizontally across the foreground sand, with grey glazes softening the background into mist. The mood is quiet and overcast, with the reds and ochres doing all the colour work.
