A large bleached driftwood stump lies across the middle of the frame, its root tangle splayed out to the left and its trunk tapering to the right. The grain is warm gold and tan, and it sits on a bed of rounded pebbles that fills the whole foreground in grey, brown, black and the odd rust-orange stone.
Behind the log the sea is smoothed to a pale, milky haze, as if shot with a long exposure. The sky above grades from soft blue at the top to peach, apricot and a band of orange at the horizon, with thin streaked cloud. A second piece of driftwood sits faintly on the far right. It is a calm photograph with a low, quiet horizon.
