About Dusky Scene
A single tall cypress stands slightly right of centre, its dark spire running from the lower third almost to the top edge of the canvas. Behind it a pale field of wheat-coloured grey stretches back to a low ridge of wooded hills. On the left, a small farmhouse with a square bell tower sits among scattered pines. The sky takes up more than half the picture: banked cumulus in thick white paint, torn through by streaks of near-black storm cloud drifting horizontally across the top.
The whole scene is painted in greys, from charcoal to chalk white, with raised strokes in the cloud heads and stippled dabs in the cypress foliage. Grass and shrubs in the lower right foreground are worked in short, broken marks. It has the quiet, close-weather mood of a country afternoon just before rain.
Suits a hallway, bedroom or dining room where the walls are white, grey or pale timber. The greyscale palette sits well with black-framed photographs, linen upholstery and brushed steel or black metal fittings. Its upright shape works on a narrow wall between doorways, or above a sideboard or bedhead in a room with restrained colour. Browse more landscape oil paintings, all hand-painted oil paintings.
