About Eiffel
A wide boulevard runs from the lower edge of the canvas toward the Eiffel Tower, which stands in pale silhouette against a gold and apricot sunset. Tall Haussmann-style buildings line both sides, the left block in warm brown with green shop awnings and lit windows, the right in ochre with a red awning. A leafy tree rises in the centre. Small figures in dark coats cluster on the footpaths, with a woman in a red coat and a carriage with horses mid-street.
The wet roadway is laid in horizontal strokes of grey, cream and rose that catch the light from the shopfronts. Paint is applied thickly with a knife in the road and awnings, thinner and softer in the sky. It reads as a busy evening in Paris just after rain, warm rather than grand, with the tower kept small and hazy in the distance.
Suits a dining room, entry hall or lounge with warm timber, brass or leather. The ochre and amber tones sit well against cream, taupe or soft green walls, and the painting works above a sideboard or a fireplace. Pairs with French cafe prints, bistro chairs and low lamplight.
