About Forest Day Two
A narrow river runs from the foreground into the middle distance, flanked by banks of tall birches and pines whose trunks are painted in pale grey and white with knife-worked bark texture. On the left bank sits a small timber cabin with a grey shingle roof, half screened by leaves. Behind it a rocky peak rises, its snow slopes catching coral light from a sunset sky of pink and cream cloud. Warm ochre and rust undergrowth fills both banks.
The river carries the strongest colour in the picture: a vertical band of salmon pink reflection cutting through green and turquoise water. Foliage is dabbed in short loaded strokes, so the leaf canopies sit slightly raised off the canvas. It is a calm, warm evening scene with a clear path for the eye straight up the water to the mountain.
Suits a living room, hallway or bedroom with timber floors, linen sofas and warm neutral walls. The coral and green reading works beside rattan, leather and brass lamps, and the vertical trees suit a wall above a sideboard or low bookcase. Good above a mantel in a country or cottage-style home.
