A single foxglove stem rises from the bottom left and leans gently to the right, rendered in the manner of an X-ray. The bell-shaped flowers hang off both sides of the stem in a staggered row, each one see-through, so the inner veins and small dark markings show through the petals.
The palette is only black, soft grey and clean white. Tightly packed buds crown the top as a dense dark cluster, while the lower bells open wider and fade to pale grey at their lips. The background is pure white with no horizon or shadow, and the square format gives the stem plenty of empty space either side.
