A dark horse fills the frame, caught mid-gallop and seen side-on, facing right. Its front hoof is tucked up under the chest while the hind legs push off the ground. The mane flies back from the neck and a long, thick tail streams out to the left. Light catches the shoulder and flank, picking out the muscle against the deep brown coat.
The whole image is in sepia, with cream and tan tones across the background. The surface looks worn and mottled, with blotchy stains and a dark, uneven border around a pale panel, like an aged photographic plate. Grass and dust sit at the horse's feet, and its shadow trails across the ground below. There is no lettering.
