Climbing rose stems wind up a pale powder-blue background, drawn in fine ink-style linework. Four full roses and a half-seen bloom sit along the vines, each built from layered petals with close hatching. The upper and right-hand roses are outlined in dark slate blue, while the large central rose mixes blue and gold outlines.
Leaves are filled with cream and shaded with short parallel strokes. Those near the top are slate blue, and those toward the bottom turn metallic gold, as does the lowest rose, which is drawn almost entirely in gold. The background is mottled and washed like aged plaster, with faint scuffs, and a worn gold edge runs around the border. The look is a decorative illustration in a chinoiserie style.
