A single sea fan coral fills the portrait frame, its branches spreading upward and outward from a dark base near the bottom centre. The skeleton is drawn as a fine net of small irregular cells, in dark brown with copper and bronze tints where the branches overlap. The longest fronds reach almost to the top edge.
Behind the coral, vertical streaks of cream, soft grey and taupe run down the canvas like dragged paint. Bands of metallic gold leaf sit across the top and bottom, with flecks and scrapes of gold breaking into the neutral ground. It reads as a mixed-media botanical study with a worn, layered surface rather than a photograph.
