A dense bouquet fills the upright frame against a near-black, faintly mottled ground. At the base sit three full cream-white roses with tightly layered petals, above them a ruffled pale pink carnation with fringed edges, a deep purple tulip streaked with black, and a pale blue-white tulip leaning in from the right. Smaller blooms thread through the arrangement: white phlox, a small yellow-centred flower, a lilac hydrangea head at lower right and a wisp of white cow parsley at the top.

A blue-violet morning glory and dark green leaves trail along the lower left, with fine stems and tendrils crossing the shadowed background. Tonal contrast does the work here: the whites and soft pinks glow forward while the olive foliage sinks back into the dark. The mood is quiet and formal, closer to a seventeenth-century still life than a bright modern floral, and it reads as a single luminous shape from across a room.
