A lone surfer walks along the top left of the frame with a board held overhead, reduced to a dark silhouette against the glowing shoreline. The figure is small, which gives the beach a wide, quiet scale. A bright patch of reflected sun sits just beside the surfer.
Wet sand fills most of the picture, streaked in horizontal bands of amber, honey and deep bronze where the low sun reflects off the thin film of water. Small waves roll in from the right with pale foamy edges, and scattered rocks and shells dot the tide line. It is a photograph with a warm, almost single-colour palette.
