A large yellow rooster stands side-on in the left half of the picture, head raised and turned slightly away. Its comb and wattle are a strong red, and a spray of pale cream feathers rises from the back of its neck. The body is built from soft washes of butter yellow and orange, with a white patch showing under the belly and thin orange legs and feet below.
Behind the bird, a fence of weathered rails runs across the scene, its paint worn to flecks of turquoise, rust orange and brown. The background and ground are loose purple, grey and mauve washes that pool and bleed into each other, with bare paper left white along the bottom edge. The watercolour looks wet and free, with visible drips and soft blooms of pigment.
