Four gondolas sit side by side on flat, silky water, their hulls softened into smooth blurs by a long exposure. Dark timber mooring poles rise in uneven rows between them, some leaning slightly, and each pole is sharp against the pale water behind.
In the distance a low island with a church and tall bell tower sits on the horizon, small and quiet. Heavy grey cloud streaks across the sky above it. The black and white photograph is square, with soft reflections of the boats fading into the foreground.
