About Happy Hearts
A wide grid of roughly 35 square tiles fills the canvas, five rows deep and seven across. Most squares hold a single heart pressed or scratched into thick, waxy paint; others are filled instead with fine combed ridges that run horizontally like corduroy. Colours shift tile to tile: chalky cream and pale celadon dominate, broken by bright orange, olive green, mustard yellow, warm terracotta, plum and charcoal. One dark red square near the centre carries the scratched letters of the word love.
The surface is the point here, built up in heavy layers then cut back so the hearts read as impressions rather than painted shapes. The overall effect is soft and worn, closer to old tiles or pressed metal than to a poster of hearts.
Built for a long wall: above a sofa in a family living room, along a hallway, or over a bed head. The chalky creams sit well with limewashed walls, rattan and pale oak, while the orange and olive squares pick up terracotta pots, kilim rugs and warm brass lighting.
