A small, round orange-red sun sits just right of centre in a hazy blue-grey sky, with loose strokes of salmon and peach cloud streaking across the top of the canvas. Below it the harbour fades into mist, with the faint outlines of masts, chimneys, cranes and moored vessels barely separated from the sky.
In the foreground a dark rowboat carries two upright figures across calm water, with a second boat behind it on the left. A broken column of orange reflection runs down from the sun in short, bright dashes. Soft blue ripples with touches of green fill the water, and the brushwork is loose and visible, in an impressionist style.
